Second half pushes Orediggers past Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State shot a season high 48.9 percent from the field but fell to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, 77-61, Sunday evening in the Chicione Center.

After trailing 35-29 at half, the Orediggers opened the third quarter on a 15 to four scoring run to build a 17 point lead. Chadron State lowered the deficit to 58-53, but Colorado School of Mines responded with a 19 to eight scoring run to finish the game.

The loss drops CSC to 0-3 on the season and in conference play. Colorado School of Mines improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Orediggers shot 41.1 percent (23-56) compared to the Eagles 48.9 percent (23-47). The visitors were five of 18 (27.8 percent) from three. CSC finished 45 percent (9-20) from behind the arc, also a season high.

Colorado School of Mines converted on 26 of their 35 attempts from the charity stripe, compared to the hosts six of 10 attempts.

Chadron State was outrebounded 35 to 28 in the loss. The Orediggers had 16 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 22 second chance points.

20 Eagle turnovers resulted in 26 points for Colorado School of Mines, while Chadron State scored eight points off seven Oredigger turnovers.

Jori Peters led CSC with 19 points. Meaghan Ross and Taryn Foxen joined Peters in double-figures, with 12 and 10, respectively. Ross finished four of seven from the field and three of six from behind the arc for her career high. Freshman Olivia Waufle had a team high six rebounds.

Liz Holter scored a game high 22 points for the visitors. Denali Pinto added 18 and Courtney Stanton added 10. Sammy Van Sickle was held scoreless but had a game high nine rebounds.

Chadron State returns to action on Monday, as they host Regis at 5:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Center.
