COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa’s Karst Hunter, South Dakota Mines’ Kyante Christian and Chadron State’s Gunnar Jones are the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Football Players of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Hunter had an efficient outing over the weekend, completing 18 of his 25 passes for 314 yards in an explosive 56-37 win on the road against New Mexico Highlands on Saturday. The redshirt freshman quarterback claims Offensive Player of the Week honors after registering three passing touchdowns and a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Mavericks. Hunter has won the RMAC offensive honor twice this season.
Christian claims his first Defensive Player of the Week award of the season after a strong outing for the Hardrockers against Chadron State over the weekend. The junior defensive end claimed 11 total tackles on the day, five solo tackles and a pair of sacks against the Eagles.
Jones repeats as Special Teams Player of the Week after scoring seven points in Chadron State’s 31-20 win at home over South Dakota Mines last weekend. The kicker was a perfect 4-for-4 on PATs and added in a 35-yard field goal in the victory.
Offensive Player of the Week: Karst Hunter, Colorado Mesa – Fr. – QB – Miller, S.D.
Hunter was fantastic in the Mavericks’ 56-37 win over New Mexico Highlands Saturday, finishing the contest with 314 passing yards and a 72-percent completion average. The redshirt freshman completed 18 of his 25 passing attempts, including a 70-yard bomb to Lionell McConnell for his third touchdown of the first half. He added in a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second half, including a 34-yard scamper to open the third quarter.
Defensive Player of the Week: Kyante Christian, South Dakota Mines – Jr. – DE – Aurora, Colo.
Christian recorded 11 tackles in total for the Hardrockers Saturday in a narrow 31-20 loss on the road against Chadron State. The junior made his defensive presence felt with five solo tackles and six assisted tackles against the Eagles. He recorded two solo sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss, which totaled 11 yards for the contest.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Gunnar Jones, Chadron State – Sr. – K – Florence, Ala.
Jones was extremely efficient for the Eagles, totaling seven points in the 31-20 win over South Dakota Mines on Saturday. The senior converted a 35-yard field goal and went a perfect 4-for-4 on PATs in the Eagles’ victory. He also recorded three punts in the contest for an average of 40 yards.
