WICHITA, Kan. — Cori Campbell of Oklahoma Wesleyan University has been named the 2020-21 KCAC Female Student-Athlete Champion of Character, the conference office announced Thursday. All KCAC Champions of Character Awards are presented by IMA Financial Group and Dissinger Reed.

The sophomore from Colorado Springs has made an impact on and off the tennis court in her two years in Bartlesville. Campbell served as the sophomore class president at OKWU in the 2020-21 school year, as well as acting as a student mentor. She has been able to achieve a high level of success in the classroom, currently holding a 3.905 cumulative GPA and has been recognized on the Dean’s List for her academic achievements. On the court, Campbell was named to the 2021 All-KCAC Women’s Tennis Preseason Team and took fourth place at the 2020 KCAC Fall Tennis Individual Championships in No. 1 Singles.

“You can’t choose the outcome of your match, but you can choose who you represent on the court. I am honored to receive such an award,” Campbell said when reflecting on receiving this honor. “Character is the most important thing when it comes to playing a competitive sport. It is more important to represent who you want to represent than to win the match.”

“Cori is such a tremendous young lady who is supportive of her school, teammates and me as a Coach,” Julia Mongin, head tennis coach at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, commented. “I am very proud of her growth on and off the court during her first year competing as an Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OKWU) Eagle. We are privileged to have such a great leader and a student-athlete who sets a great example not only as an OKWU tennis player, but also an overall standout as a person for OKWU. Well deserved!”

“We are very excited that Cori was chosen to receive this award,” Kirk Kelley, athletic director at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, remarked. “It is a special award, and Cori is a special student-athlete. She possesses all of the qualities that this award represents, and she is so deserving of this honor. On behalf of our entire athletic program, I want to publicly congratulate her.”
